The Wildwood probably existed in a near natural state for a few thousand years and only when the human population began to grow significantly did the wildwood begin to diminish. Initially, small populations would have had little impact on this natural woodland with only small areas of woodland removed for housing and grazing livestock. However, as populations began to grow and the need to ever increasing food and thus land to grow it on, did the wildwood begin to disappear. Pasture for grazing, arable land for growing crops and huge areas for villages, towns and eventually cities took the place of the wildwood.
Even today, most of the land is managed for farming.
