Education

Watchtree Nature Reserve Ltd places a strong emphasis on environmental education working with local Schools, Young Persons organisations, Disability Associations and Universities.

Focused primarily on the National Curriculum, Staff at Watchtree can cater for Primary, Junior and Secondary education through subjects including Science, Geography, Art and Local History.

Those interested in a more challenging and hands on approach can participate in the John Muir Award. John Muir (1838-1914) was one of the founding fathers for the conservation of wild places during the 19 th Century and his spirit lives on in the John Muir Award; DISCOVER, EXPLORE, CONSERVE AND SHARE forming the basis of this four stage award. Contact the Nature Reserve Manager 01228 712539 for more information or click on the following John Muir Award link.

Successful participants receive a certificate but more importantly an increased awareness and appreciation of the local environment.

Other schools base their field studies at Watchtree and make seasonal visits to the reserve to survey and monitor wildlife and habitats.

In addition to the ever popular field studies including Pond dipping, Butterfly surveys and floral/vegetation surveys, Watchtree also has in the field work/study areas and seating areas. For indoor based work, our Conference/Meeting facilities provide work and study space for an average class of school children. The conference centre also has the benefit of multi media and closed loop hearing systems.

Staff at Watchtree can also organise and support groups who wish to participate in the John Muir Award with Watchtree being the ideal base for environmental projects of this nature

For additional information or to discuss with the Nature Reserve Manager additional study projects please contact: 01228 712539 or email: wnr@watchtree.co.uk

Watchtree is currently working closely staff and students with the University Of Central Lancashire in Penrith(UCLAN) with a focus on enhancing grassland and grazing management at the reserve. These studies should provide us with new knowledge and understanding and lead to ways of enhancing the conservation value of the meadows.
